About

Entiat is a stunning fabric—a truly long fiber flax linen with heft for durability and warmth and a classic texture of enduring quality that will last for years and years. It is 100% linen, and a lot of it. Entiat will last hundreds perhaps even thousands of years with care (thousands would mean putting on a mummy and never sitting on it!). Flax linen is an amazing fiber - like hemp. It is impervious to UV rays and will not degrade in UV light.

Eco Facts

Entiat is Oeko-Tex 100 certified, which means that there are zero chemicals of concern remaining in the fabric. This is important because the majority of fabrics are approximately 25% residual chemicals BY WEIGHT, many of them with a highly unsavory toxicity profile. We require water treatment at each step of the fabric production process. Why is water treatment important?

Although Oeko-Tex 100 does not require water treatment, we do. Why?We require water treatment at each step of the fabric production process. Why is water treatment important?

Water is used at every stage in fabric manufacturing: to dissolve chemicals to be used in one step, then to wash out those same chemicals to be ready for the next step. It takes between 10% and 100% of the weight of the fabric in chemicals to produce that fabric. The production of the fabric covering your sofa required between 4 and 20 pounds of chemicals. The chemically infused effluent - saturated with dyes, de-foamers, detergents, bleaches, optical brighteners, equalizers and many other chemicals - is often released into the local river, where it enters the groundwater and our food chain. Why? Mills keep prices artificially low because they're not paying the costs of pollution: Dyeing one pound of cotton uses 100 gallons of water, costs $0.50 cents for water, power and dye - and $2.00 for toxic cleanup*. The textile industry is the #1 industrial polluter of fresh water on the planet, and this chemical degradation contributes disproportionately to dead zones in oceans, desertification and reduction of species diversity, to name but a few problems. As Gene Lisa has said, "There is not a 'no peeing' part of the swimming pool." We're all downstream.

The Fabric Name

Though the town of Entiat is in the hot and dry part of Washington State, it's all about water. Fish, power, fruit, and recreation—all in abundance from the mighty Columbia river.

  • abrasion test results: 50,000 Martindale**
  • care: Although Entiat is washable, and even pre-shrunk, it is so heavy that you should not try to wash more than 3 yards in your home machines. Also, water minerals can strip Entiat of its luscious softness, so wash a small sample first to see if you are OK with that. Otherwise, professionally green clean.

Why choose us?

We've done the work for you

Over the years, Patty and Leigh Anne dedicated tons of time researching ethical and sustainable production—how it’s done, and what the implications are to us (and to all living things)  and to our planet.  They even put it in their mission statement, a goal “to change the way textiles are being made” – kind of a reach for such an upstart little company, right?
